easy! kompakt = compact, + kiste = box. germans combine words, no spaces. that's it.
also i like k's. got two prominent ones in my last name.
the site started with cd's only, back in 1994. online since early 1996 (history).
ps. my dear friends @ kompakt (the well respected record shop)
renamed the shop from 'delirium cologne' to 'kompakt' in 1997.
their label started in 1998. just for the sequence ;-)
